LA GOCCIA
20 inches high, red Verona marble and black Carrera 1986
HANIWA, Japan
Tumulus period, 3rd-6th century.
A child-like figure with outstretched arms and fanciful projectionsfrom the head, crafted of coils of clay which has fired a terra cottashade with darker patches, such a figure would rim the burialmounds of pre-Buddhist Japan. Some scholars have suggested Shamanistic origins and a relation to Shintoism. These delightful representations possess a modernity of concept that strikes a cord within our being.. Former Victor Hauge collection and Mayuyama, Japan. Originally purchased in the late 1950’s.
